“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4” will be released in several stages, with DMZ becoming available before the game’s official launch. Players who pre-order a digital copy of the game will be able to try the extraction shooter mode starting October 20.
This will not be the only “Modern Warfare 4” content unlocked early. The campaign will become available on October 16, DMZ early access will begin four days later, and the game’s official release and multiplayer launch are scheduled for October 23.
DMZ will get its own window before multiplayer launches
Early access to the campaign has been offered in the “Modern Warfare” series before, but the DMZ rollout stands out because it unlocks a multiplayer mode ahead of the official launch. Players who pre-order a digital copy will have three days to familiarize themselves with DMZ before the regular multiplayer mode becomes available.
This schedule separates three major parts of “Modern Warfare 4.” The campaign, DMZ, and multiplayer will not compete for attention on the same day, allowing those interested in trying the extraction mode to devote time to it before the main multiplayer progression begins. DMZ could also attract more attention from streamers and viewers ahead of the game’s full release, although this is merely a potential benefit of the decision rather than a promise from the studio.
Separate progression could matter from day one
DMZ will have a progression system separate from the other parts of the game. As a result, early access is more than just a brief opportunity to look around the mode before launch. Players who are active during those three additional days could potentially accumulate more items and learn the map more thoroughly.
This knowledge and accumulated inventory could provide an advantage on October 23, when players without early access join the mode. Those already familiar with the environment may be able to navigate the map more quickly and better understand where to move during matches. However, no specific progression rates or data have been provided that would make it possible to assess the scale of this advantage.
The shown “Single Squad Mission” was not a public PvE playlist
Another unclear aspect of DMZ was discussed during a Q&A session hosted by “Infinity Ward” on Reddit. Players asked whether there would be a PvE-only playlist in which they would not have to encounter other people.
The question arose after a menu option called “Single Squad Mission” was spotted in an earlier gameplay presentation video. Its name suggested that it could be a separate DMZ variant for a single squad, but the option was no longer present in a later trailer.
“Infinity Ward” explained that the option seen in the video was an internal developer playlist. It is intended for studio employees who need to enter matches alone and work on the game, so this menu option was not designed for public use.
This explanation applies specifically to the “Single Squad Mission” option that was shown. It does not confirm the broader claim that “Modern Warfare 4” could not have any separate PvE playlist at all. The only thing confirmed is that the menu option captured in the gameplay footage was intended for developers rather than players.
Playing without squadmates will not mean a PvE session
In the final version of DMZ, players will be able to disable automatic squad filling and enter matches without squadmates. However, choosing this option will not guarantee a session without other players. Anyone entering alone will still find themselves in the shared DMZ environment, so this option should not be confused with a PvE-only mode.
The “Eurogamer” writer was skeptical of the developers’ explanation. He questioned why the internal playlist had an icon created specifically for it and why this part of the menu had not been hidden or blurred in the publicly shown gameplay footage. Elements not intended to be shown are often obscured in behind-the-scenes videos, but that was not done in this case.
These circumstances are arguments raised by the writer, not proof that a PvE option intended for players was removed. “Infinity Ward’s” official position remains unchanged: the “Single Squad Mission” shown was an internal developer playlist, and disabling squad filling will not remove other players from DMZ matches.
When and where “Modern Warfare 4” will be released
Anyone who wants to start playing DMZ on October 20 will need to have pre-ordered a digital copy of “Modern Warfare 4.” The game is scheduled for an official release on October 23 for PC, PS5, “Xbox Series X/S,” and “Switch 2.” Multiplayer will also become available on the same day.
