Jagex has canceled RuneScape: Reignited less than two weeks after unveiling the mode. One of the biggest announcements shown at RuneFest has been scrapped following strong feedback from longtime RuneScape players. The company announced the decision in a blog post and a video published on YouTube.
Reignited was being developed as a separate fresh-start environment, primarily intended to make the long-running MMORPG more accessible to newcomers. However, the chosen model would not only have separated the economy and some shared activities, but also forced interested veterans to start from scratch. These consequences became the main focus of the community’s criticism.
Why Jagex changed its plans so quickly
Explaining the cancellation, Associate Creative Director Mod Ryan said the studio had received a wide range of opinions from players. He linked the current decision to an earlier chapter in RuneScape’s history when, according to him, a failure to listen to the community changed the combat system permanently, and dealing with the consequences took more than a decade.
During the RuneFest presentation, Mod Ryan said the studio did not want to repeat the mistakes of the past. After receiving player feedback about Reignited, Jagex decided to cancel the mode entirely. The decision was made less than two weeks after it was revealed.
How Reignited would have worked
RuneScape: Reignited was not presented as a new MMO. It was intended to be a mode within the current RuneScape in which players would create new characters and begin all progression from scratch. These characters would have had an economy separate from regular RuneScape accounts.
The separation would have extended beyond existing wealth or item prices. Reignited accounts would only have been able to buy and sell items among themselves. Their characters would also have been unable to fight bosses alongside characters from regular RuneScape accounts. The new mode would therefore have had its own self-contained trading environment and clear limits on shared gameplay.
There were no plans to allow existing accounts to transfer into Reignited. Even someone who had played RuneScape for many years would have needed to create a new character to join the new mode. Previous progress, accumulated wealth, and the memories associated with an old account would have remained outside the separate Reignited environment.
The community feared long-term fragmentation
One of the biggest objections concerned where new RuneScape players would end up. Because Reignited was meant to give everyone an equal starting point and a market separate from the old economy, it would have become the obvious choice for newcomers. In that case, however, they would not have joined the regular RuneScape community and economy.
Over time, this could have left the main game without some of the new players needed to maintain an active community. Instead of helping newcomers become part of the existing RuneScape ecosystem, the mode would have directed them into a separate system where trading and some shared activities with older accounts would not have been possible.
For veterans, the problem was different but no less significant. To try Reignited, they would have had to leave behind characters in which they may have invested thousands of hours and a considerable amount of money. With no option to transfer accounts, choosing the new mode would have meant starting over completely rather than continuing their current journey in a different environment.
The canceled mode was intended to address a genuine economic problem
Although the community opposed the chosen model, Reignited was not created without reason. RuneScape’s economy has been experiencing extremely high inflation for some time. Because of the high prices, starting a new character and reaching the late game can be extremely difficult.
The scale of the problem is illustrated by Bond prices. This item can be exchanged for one month of paid membership. In Old School RuneScape, one Bond sells for 11.2 million coins, while in regular RuneScape it costs 141.3 million coins.
An economy built from scratch for Reignited would not have inherited the wealth accumulated over many years in the main game or the prices that had developed as a result. This could have made it easier for interested newcomers to get started. At the same time, the solution would have created a community fragmentation problem that many longtime players considered too serious.
With Reignited canceled, the issues of high inflation and difficult progression for new characters remain unresolved. Jagex will no longer pursue this particular mode, but the obstacle it was intended to remove has not gone away.
Other plans announced at RuneFest remain in place
Reignited was only one of the RuneScape announcements shown at RuneFest. The game is set to receive the Adventure Guide update and other additions in December. A free trial is also planned.
RuneScape 4 was also revealed at the event. Unlike Reignited, which was intended to be a mode within the current game, RuneScape 4 was presented as an entirely new MMO. Meanwhile, the main RuneScape game still faces the same challenge that the separate fresh start was meant to address: attracting new players without fragmenting the community or forcing veterans to abandon years of accumulated progress.
